I ran across a comment made by an Instagram influencer this week. We can make fun of social media influencers all we want, but the reality is that some of these influencers impact the lives of at least thousands of people, and some millions. The comment made was regarding the Easter Sunday bombing in Sri Lanka. Now, normally I have a zero-response rate to trolls and fools on social media. People say dumb things all the time on social media, and I decided a while back that Mark Twain was right when he said, “Never argue with an idiot, for he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.” This is especially true on social media. So, despite my normal mode of operandi, I cannot hold my tongue this time. The influencer said, “The fact that the West freaked out about Notre Dame (deaths: 0) & is barely talking about Sri Lanka (deaths: 200+) is a clear sign of internalized racism & imperialism.” Wait. What????? We just jumped down a hole so deep even Alice turned back.
The near media blackout on the Sri Lanka bombing that caused over 350 deaths and wounded at least 500, according to the latest reports, had absolutely nothing to do with racism and imperialism. This comment is nothing but a bunch of virtue signaling balderdash. Why is it balderdash? Because nothing about this bombing or the subsequent lack of response by the West (and let’s be accurate here - the Western mainstream media) had to do with racism or Western imperialism. The imperialism accusation is so far-fetched and nebulous my only response is to say that by definition, no Western country is trying to acquire or extend their rule over Sri Lanka. I’m really not sure how imperialism made the cut for this comment except that it is a nice buzzword that immediately triggers Leftist tears.
In regards to racism, first, those men, women, and children weren’t killed because they were Sri Lankan; over 30 nationalities were targeted in this attack, including U.S. and British citizens. Most victims were targeted because of their Christianity. This attack was carried out by religious extremists, either ISIS or Al Qaeda with ISIS claiming responsibility and lauding the “blessed attack” that targeted Christians during their “blasphemous holiday”, referring to Easter. Second, the bombing was almost completely ignored by the mainstream media because it is an example of Christian persecution, and the mainstream media has a bone deep desire to completely cover up the very prevalent persecution that occurs every day against Christians around the world. According to Open Doors USA, 11 Christians a day are killed because of their beliefs. This was a blatant attack against Christians, springing from anti-Christian bigotry; likewise, the lackluster response by western media springs from anti-Christian bigotry. Furthermore, the very fact this influencer also did not acknowledge the most important fact about this bombing, the Christianity of those killed, is anti-Christian bigotry. This Instagram influencer is as guilty as “the West” she so sincerely denigrates.
The West is not racist nor imperialistic. If America is so racist, why has there been a fivefold increase in black immigration to the U.S. since 1980? If America is so racist, why did 54% of U.S. immigration in 2017 consist of a non-white demographic? The Sri Lanka attack and the subsequent anemic response by the mainstream media is, sadly, just another day of persecution and hatred for Christians in the twenty-first century, for that matter in the history of Christendom. Matthew 10:22, 26-28 tells us, “You will be hated by everyone on account of my name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. . . So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” P.S. Obama and Hillary, we aren't "Easter worshipers." We’re called Christians. Is it too hard to say? We worship our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who has the victory over death, and He’s coming back again!
